13 Baltimore County students named Byrd Scholars for 2009

TOWSON, MD. (June 18, 2009) - Thirteen graduates of Baltimore County Public Schools have been awarded the Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship for 2009 by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE).

The 2009 Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholars from Baltimore County Public Schools are:

  • Natalie Elardo, Chesapeake High School
  • Michael Wu, Eastern Technical High School
  • Angela Gauthier, Dulaney High School
  • Hejia Wang, Dulaney High School
  • Aria Esposito, Dundalk High School
  • Erin Reisfeld, Franklin High School
  • Arik Wingate, Kenwood High School
  • Qiao Wu, Lansdowne High School
  • Desiree Gonzales, Overlea High School
  • Jennifer Narod, Owings Mills High School
  • Victoria Gan, Perry Hall High School
  • Nataniel Mandelberg, Pikesville High School
  • Stephanie Sarbanes, Towson High School

    Each of the 143 honorees from across the state of Maryland receives a four-year scholarship worth up to $1,500 per year, to be used for undergraduate study at any institution of higher education based on cost of attendance. The scholars were chosen from more than 600 nominees from across the state.

    "These students are among our many outstanding recent graduates who are attending college with the help of scholarships," said Superintendent Dr. Joe A. Hairston. "We applaud them for their achievement and wish them well as they further their education."

    According to MSDE, the Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship Program is designed to promote student excellence and achievement. The program recognizes exceptionally able students who show promise of continued excellence as they pursue higher education. Principals at both public and private schools were invited to nominate students from the top 1 percent of their graduating classes for this prestigious award. Qualifying GED and home school graduates also are considered for the honor.
