National Technical Honor Society to induct new members at Sollers Point

Superintendent Dr. Joe A. Hairston will join students and staff for the 18th Annual Induction Ceremony for the National Technical Honors Society at Sollers Point Technical High School. The event will begin at 9:00 a.m. in the school gymnasium, located at 325 Sollers Point Road in Dundalk. The 40 students to be inducted have demonstrated outstanding performances in their technical program over a two-year period and also earned satisfactory grades in all other courses. Character traits such as honesty, responsibility, and leadership were also considered during the recommendation process. The National Technical Honors Society is a nonprofit organization that recognizes the scholastic achievement and outstanding qualities of young people, identified as among the top performing students in career and technical education. More than 2,000 schools and colleges are now affiliated with the society.

Board of Education Recognition Ceremony

The Board of Education of Baltimore County will hold its annual spring Recognition Ceremony beginning at 7:00 p.m. at Loch Raven High School, 1212 Cowpens Avenue in Towson. More than 140 students, teachers, parents, and community members are scheduled to be honored at the annual event, one of three recognition ceremonies hosted by the Board of Education each year.

Elmwood Elementary team to compete in statewide tournament

A team from Elmwood Elementary School will compete in the statewide Odyssey of the Mind tournament, to begin at 8:30 a.m. at the Harbour School, located at 11251 Dolfield Boulevard in Owings Mills. Elmwood Elementary is the only school representing Baltimore County Public Schools in this year’s statewide tournament. Odyssey of the Mind competitions involve creative exercises in which teamwork, cooperation, and ingenuity are applied to complete various tasks. The World Championship is to be held at the University of Maryland from May 31 to June 3, 2008.

Coming Up!

Registration for pre-kindergarten and kindergarten at Carney Elementary School in April

Pre-kindergarten registration will be held at Carney Elementary School on Monday, April 14, and Monday, April 21, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Kindergarten registration will be held at the school on Monday, April 28, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Registration packets can be picked up during any school day. Interested parents are asked to call Carney Elementary School before the registration dates to schedule an appointment. The school is located at 3131 East Joppa Road in Joppa.

Pinewood Elementary to hold kindergarten registration in April

Pinewood Elementary School will host its registration for kindergarten on Tuesday, April 22 and Tuesday, April 29, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Registration can only be conducted through appointment. Children being registered must be turning five years old by September 1, 2008, and must reside within the Pinewood Elementary School boundaries. Registration will take place at the school, located at 200 Rickswood Road in Timonium.

Parent Education Night at Pikesville Middle School on April 9

Pikesville Middle School will sponsor a Parent Education event on Internet safety on Wednesday, April 9. Sergeant Robert Lantz, criminal investigative section supervisor for Maryland’s Criminal Investigation Division, Computer Crimes Section, will speak to parents about safe computer use practices and social networking sites. The event will take place at 7:15 p.m. in the school library.

Dundalk Elementary School to participate in Rebuilding Together on April 26

The staff of Dundalk Elementary School will participate in the national Rebuilding Together program by helping to repair two houses in Turner Station, an area neighborhood. On Saturday, April 26, teams comprised of Dundalk Elementary staff, families, and friends will assist with electrical upgrades, window repairs, painting, safety improvements, concrete pouring, and other work in the two homes. Rebuilding Together repairs homes and revitalizes communities by mobilizing a volunteer workforce. Since 1989, Rebuilding Together volunteers have worked on nearly 1,000 properties.
