Baltimore County Public Schools celebrates academic success at 76 schools

Schools recognized during afternoon ceremony today

TOWSON, MD. (March 19, 2008) - Baltimore County Public Schools honored 76 schools today for their performance in the 2007 Maryland School Assessment program, which includes the Maryland School Assessments and Maryland High School Assessments.

The schools' principals were the stars of an afternoon ceremony in Timonium that recognized each school for its achievements in the 2007 assessments. The schools were identified in January by the Maryland State Department of Education.

In addition to overall performance, schools also were honored if they improved the performance of special populations of students from 2006 to 2007. Special populations categories include race/ethnicity, special education, limited English proficiency, and students who receive free or reduced-price meals.

The Maryland School Assessment is a test of reading and math achievement that meets the testing requirements of the federal No Child Left Behind Act. The test is given each year in reading and math at grades 3 through 8. The test includes multiple-choice questions and questions requiring written responses. It measures basic as well as higher level skills.

Passing the Maryland High School Assessments is a graduation requirement beginning with the graduating class of 2009. The High School Assessments cover four core subjects - English (English 2), mathematics (algebra/data analysis), science (biology), and social studies (government).
