Saturday, March 15

Spring Art & Craft Show to blossom at Loch Raven High School

The Loch Raven High School Booster Club is sponsoring its first Spring Art & Craft Show from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. More than 50 quality artists will be on site to present their quality original handmade art, including Windsor chairs, watercolor and acrylic prints, jewelry, stained glass, handmade paper books, quilts, embroidery, iron work, pet portraits, and more. Refreshments, including pit beef, will be available. Admission is $2.00 for adults and $1.00 for students and senior citizens. Admission is free for those under age 12. All proceeds support the Loch Raven High School stadium project to bring water and sewer services, field irrigation, bathrooms, a press box, and additional bleachers to the LRHS stadium.

Lansdowne Elementary School students to visit WMAR-TV as part of PMJ Foundation's "Career Awareness Project"

Children participating in the "Career Awareness Project" at Lansdowne Elementary School will visit WMAR-TV at 6400 York Road in Rodgers Forge from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. as part of CAP's three-month effort to provide practical knowledge and exposure to students to possible career opportunities. The project, which is sponsored by the PMJ Foundation, includes workshops, panel discussions, informational displays, hands-on interaction, and presentations about a variety of professions for students to consider. The after-school program works with a dozen students at Lansdowne Elementary School, 2301 Alma Road in Lansdowne, each Wednesday for three months. Upon conclusion of the program, a closing ceremony honors the students for their participation.

Piano sale offered by BCPS as part of the Public School Piano Loan Program

Through the Public School Piano Loan Program, unsold new acoustic and digital (electronic) pianos will go on public sale from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at 1708 Whitehead Road in Woodlawn. The instruments are part of more than $75,000 worth of new pianos provided free to Baltimore County Public Schools by Jason's Music Center through the loan program. The loaned pianos, including brands such as Yamaha, Steinway, Baldwin, Kawai, Sohmer, Remington, and Young Chang, will be sold to the public at prices well below those found in stores. The sale of these pianos enables Jason's to provide BCPS schools with replacements for upcoming years. The instruments have been professionally maintained and will include many new and used grand pianos, vertical pianos, and digital pianos.

Seventh District Elementary School to celebrate its 7th annual Grandparents/Generations Day

Seventh District Elementary School, 20300 York Road in Parkton, will celebrate the school's seventh annual Grandparents/Generations Day. Visitors are invited to observe classes between 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m., and refreshments will be served by the PTA at 8:30 a.m. In addition, the school's Scholastic Book Fair also will be open. During the event, grandparents and other family members will visit classrooms and interact with children to compare educational experiences from yesterday and today. Also, certificates will be awarded to the oldest grandparent, the youngest grandparent, the family member who traveled the most miles to attend, and the one with the most grandchildren.

Riderwood Elementary School to register kindergarten students with annual Kindergarten Round-Up event

Kindergarten registration will be held at Riderwood Elementary School throughout the school day as the school, located at 1711 Landrake Road in Towson, conducts its annual Kindergarten Round-Up from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Children registering must be 5 years old by September 1, 2008, and reside within the Riderwood boundaries. Annual Multicultural Day at Ridge Ruxton School showcases Australia

The annual Multicultural Day at Ridge Ruxton School this year focuses on the nation of kangaroos and boomerangs - Australia. The event showcases different parts of the world each year, highlighted by a student performance, and includes plenty of interactive stations and fun activities for students, parents, and visitors. The Multicultural Day this year is scheduled to begin with the 10:00 a.m. student performance, followed until 11:30 a.m. with school activities. "Padonia Around the World" to debut at Padonia International Elementary School

Padonia International Elementary School will hold a "Padonia Around the World" night from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Padonia families will take a "tour around the world" as they visit exhibits of crafts, clothing, and snacks from different countries. In addition, the school's students will perform traditional dances from India. Other countries represented include Ethiopia, Ireland, Korea, Iran, Brazil, El Salvador, Mexico, China, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic. Science on display at Carney Elementary School

Carney Elementary School will hold its annual Science Fair from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the school's gymnasium at 3131 East Joppa Road in Carney. Third graders will compete in the annual "Safe Racer" races, while grade 4 and 5 students will present their displays and experiments.

Western School of Technology and Environmental Science to host annual Science Expo

Western School of Technology and Environmental Science, 100 Kenwood Avenue in Catonsville, will hold its annual Science Expo from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. At the Expo, a largely student-run showcase for the talent and creativity of the students enrolled in Western's science classes, students present projects and experiments. The event is designed to encourage further student and community interest in the sciences.

Wednesday, March 19

Hernwood Elementary School to hold an intermediate grades STEM Fair and primary grades Math Night

Hernwood Elementary School, 9919 Marriottsville Road in Randallstown, will hold an intermediate grades Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Fair and a primary grades Math Night. Both events will take place at the school from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. During the fairs, students and their families will have the opportunity to see student STEM projects and to participate in primary math activities. Pizza will be provided by the school's PTA.

Loch Raven Academy presents its Family Literacy Night

Loch Raven Academy will host Family Literacy Night from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the school's cafeteria, located at 8101 LaSalle Road in Towson. During this enjoyable experience, families will learn about literacy strategies used at the school and about an intergenerational approach that leads to improved literacy, language, and life skills. Family Literacy Night will show families that they can learn together, that learning is a mutual process, and that learning is fun.

College Savings Plans meeting at Windsor Mill Middle School

Windsor Mill Middle School, 8300 Windsor Mill Road in Randallstown, will host a parent information meeting presented by the College Savings Plans of Maryland, beginning at 7:00 p.m. This meeting, the final College Savings Plans parent information night for Baltimore County Public Schools, was rescheduled from earlier in the winter due to inclement weather. Northeast Area Educational Advisory Council to hold Pre-Budget meeting

The Northeast Area Educational Advisory Council has scheduled a public hearing to solicit opinions, ideas, and concerns regarding building-related items included in the school system's capital budget for fiscal year 2010. Views or concerns shared with advisory council members will later be shared with the Board of Education of Baltimore County as it begins deliberating its annual capital budget. Items for consideration should relate to the school system's capital needs rather than those items included in the system's annual operating budget. The meeting, which begins at 7:00 p.m., will be held at Pine Grove Middle School, 9200 Old Harford Road, Carney.

Chase Elementary School salutes dads with doughnuts

Chase Elementary School, 11701 Eastern Avenue in Chase, will honor fathers and other male caregivers with a special breakfast from 8:15 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. Chase Elementary students who attend the breakfast with their fathers (or other male relative or caregiver) will perform a special song.

White Oak School will host Disability Awareness Day

White Oak School will host its annual Disability Awareness Day, beginning with a 9:00 a.m. breakfast and opening session. During that session, students with disabilities from the across the BCPS school system will address White Oak students about their disabilities. In addition, students will have an opportunity to experience what it might be like living with a disability. From 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., the Maryland Ravens wheelchair basketball team will play against the White Oak staff in a game of basketball. The school is located at 8401 Leefield Road in Towson.

Carney to hold registration events for new students on several dates in April

Pre-kindergarten registration will be held at Carney Elementary School on Monday, April 14, and Monday, April 21 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Kindergarten registration will be held at the school on Monday, April 28 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Registration packets can be picked up beginning on Monday, March 17. Interested parents are asked to call Carney Elementary School before the registration events to schedule an appointment. The school is located on 3131 East Joppa Road.

Pine Grove Middle students collecting for the troops during March

As part of "Operation Troop TLC," the National Junior Honor Society at Pine Grove Middle School, 9200 Old Harford Road in Parkville, will collect non-perishable items during the month of March to benefit troops deployed to Iraq. All donations are welcome.
