Towson High student 1 of 4 candidates to serve as student member of the state Board of Education

TOWSON, MD. – Noureen Badwi, a junior at Towson High School and current student member of the state Board of Education, is one of four candidates to serve as the student member of the state board for 2020 – 2021.

Badwi and the other candidates will give speeches and answer questions from students at the Maryland Association of Student Councils Legislative Session on Saturday, Feb. 8, at Frederick High School. Student council members from throughout the state – including Baltimore County –will attend and will select two of the candidates to recommend to the governor. The governor will then appoint one of the two finalists to serve on the state board beginning July 1.

In her personal statement, Badwi wrote: “When I was sworn in to the State Board of Education in July, I made a promise to all of you to fight tirelessly for the issues that affect all students in Maryland, a promise that I have kept. And to this day, I continue to believe that education can and should be a great equalizer that tears down barriers, shape people’s future, and change their lives, as it has mine.

“With the work I have done, the students I have met, and with knowing all the work ahead of us, I seek to stay in the fight and continue to be a strong, effective, and fierce voice for all 896,837+ of you, on and off of the board table.“

In addition to serving on the state board, Badwi is chairwoman of the Maryland Youth Advisory Council, an intern for a U.S. senator, a member of the U.S. International Model UN Travel Team, and chair of a statewide Women’s Caucus for women under 36. Badwi studies law and public policy at Towson High and takes classes at Towson University and the Community College of Baltimore County. Her full resume can be seen online.
