Jacksonville Elementary named a 2019 - 2020 Maryland Blue Ribbon School

Among six recognized by state as exemplary schools

TOWSON, MD — Jacksonville Elementary School was named one of Maryland’s six newest Blue Ribbon Schools during a ceremony Tuesday morning at the Governor’s Mansion in Annapolis.

Baltimore County Public Schools now claims 26 Maryland Blue Ribbon Schools. Of those, 22 schools have also achieved recognition as National Blue Ribbon Schools.

“The Maryland Blue Ribbon is a justly deserved honor for Jacksonville Elementary School," said BCPS Superintendent Dr. Darryl L. Williams. “Under the strong leadership of Principal Debra Miller, Jacksonville offers a high-quality academic program with a fully engaged teaching staff and student body and a supportive community. Recognitions such as this Blue Ribbon underscore our systemwide commitment to raising the bar, closing gaps, and preparing for our future."

The Blue Ribbon Schools Program is a state and national program that recognizes and honors high performance as well as significant progress. Schools must meet rigorous standards developed by the Maryland State Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Education. This year, Jacksonville and the other honored schools were all selected in the category of exemplary high-achieving schools.

Jacksonville, which is celebrating its 25th year anniversary, serves 548 students from Kindergarten to Grade 5. The school has 84.45 percent of students meeting or exceeding expectations in math and English language arts on the Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program and has an attendance rate of 97 percent. It has received five stars on the state’s new school ranking system and was in the 99th percentile for the state. All Grade 4 students are exposed to the Advanced Academics curriculum in math, and two full classes have Advanced Academics for Grade 5 math. With support from parents and the community, Jacksonville students provided food for more than 65 families for Thanksgiving and participate in a monthly “Beans and Bread" collection to provide breakfast for hundreds of homeless individuals in Baltimore City.

As a Maryland Blue Ribbon School, Jacksonville will receive a Maryland Blue Ribbon flag, a monetary prize, $1,000 in office supplies, interactive technology equipment, and a school congratulations party. A dinner in Annapolis will be held in honor of the winning schools on March 2, 2020. On that date, each Blue Ribbon School will be honored by the Maryland House of Delegates and the Maryland Senate. The schools will also be invited by the U.S. Department of Education to apply for a National Blue Ribbon Schools designation.
