It’s time for your work to be seen! 23rd Annual BCPS Middle School Writing Contest accepting entries

TOWSON, MD. – “We want every student to have access to this opportunity.”

With those words, the Senior Literary Arts Class of George Washington Carver Center for Arts and Technology announced the 23rd Annual Middle School Writing Contest – and the desire of the class to see submissions from all Baltimore County middle schools.

The deadline for entries is Friday, Jan. 17, 2020. Three winners in each category will be notified in April and invited to attend a special award ceremony.

To encourage English teachers, library media specialists, and school counselors to help promote the contest, the class wrote in a group letter: “We are looking forward to reading your talented students’ works. Thank you for your help. We all have fond memories of middle school teachers and administrators who encouraged us to grow as writers and readers. The Middle School competition couldn’t happen without you.”

The contest is open to all Baltimore County Public Schools students in Grades 6 – 8. Young writers are asked to submit their best and most polished works. This year’s categories are short stories, poetry, creative nonfiction, and scripts. All work will be adjudicated by Carver Center’s Class of 2020 Literary Arts students.

The contest rules are that:

  • All submissions must be accompanied by the official submission cover sheet.
  • Students must include a separate cover sheet for each submission.
  • All submissions must be in Times New Roman, 12 pt. font.
  • All works must have a title. (Make it catchy, please!)
  • Each page must be numbered.
  • Short stories and nonfiction must be no longer than 10 double-spaced pages.
  • Scripts are limited to 15 double-spaced pages or less.
  • There is no page limit for poetry.
All submissions must be sent to rmlinek@bcps.org or:
