Pikesville High teacher to receive award from Maryland Society of Health and Physical Educators

TOWSON, MD — Christal Higgins, the health teacher at Pikesville High School, has earned a Simon A. McNeely award from the Maryland Society of Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE).

The award will be presented to Higgins at the SHAPE Maryland Awards Banquet on Saturday, Nov. 16, at 5:30 p.m. at the Clarion Resort Fontainebleau Hotel in Ocean City.

Simon A. McNeely Awards are presented to educators with at least five years professional experience who demonstrate excellence and innovation in teaching and service in health, physical education, recreation, or dance. Recipients must be current members of SHAPE Maryland or a relevant professional organization and have presented or actively participated in Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (HPERD) workshops and conferences in the past three years.

Higgins has been a health education teacher at Pikesville High for three years and is credited for ensuring an emphasis on moving merely from content to authentic skill development. In September, Higgins was recognized as an exemplary health educator by Baltimore County Public Schools and was selected by the Maryland State Department of Education to receive a scholarship to the SHAPE Maryland Convention.

“Ms. Higgins has been exemplary in her teaching of germane issues/conditions that impact students at this vulnerable stage of their development," said Principal Sandra Reid. “Her instruction is thoughtful, interactive, and WICORTS-based. It consistently depicts her unwavering passion for students to be empowered to make judicious lifelong health decisions for themselves and those in their sphere of influence."

WICORTS stands for Writing, Inquiry-based learning, Collaboration, Reading, Technology infusion, and Student engagement/voice.
