Pikesville High principal invited to serve on AVID Principals’ Network

Group of outstanding principals to serve as AVID leaders

TOWSON, MD — AVID Center identified Sandra G. Reid, principal of Pikesville High School, as an outstanding principal and invited her to serve on its AVID Principals’ Network.

AVID, Advancement Via Individual Determination, seeks to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society. Baltimore County Public Schools offers AVID at 22 high schools, 26 middle schools, and 11 elementary schools.

Denise Y. Rupert, Ed.S., AVID Center’s eastern division regional director, wrote to Reid, “As the building leader and AVID Champion, you will join others from our division to expand and deepen your schoolwide and districtwide knowledge. Additionally, you will learn, network, and share with other principals and be a resource for AVID."

“I am elated, humbled, and honored by this invitation to serve," Reid responded. “I will proudly represent the Eastern Division, BCPS, and Pikesville High School in this capacity."

Reid’s tenure will begin with a one-day training in Virginia Beach on Wednesday, Nov. 6.

Reid, Maryland’s 2017 High School Principal of the Year, began as principal of Pikesville High in 2015, after serving as principal at Pine Grove Middle School for eight years. She began her BCPS career as a teacher at Randallstown High School. Reid earned a bachelor's degree in economics from the University of Pennsylvania and a master's degree in education from Harvard University. Reid was named BCPS Secondary Principal of the Year in 2016.

Earlier this year, Pikesville High School was validated as one of two AVID National Demonstration High Schools in Maryland. The other is New Town High. Both schools serve as teaching and learning centers for educators interested in learning about AVID.
