Milford Mill Academy teacher, Cromwell Valley Elementary principal earn regional awards from Magnet Schools of America

Both being considered for national awards

Walter Carter
TOWSON, MD. – Walter Carter, automotive services teacher at Milford Mill Academy, has been named Teacher of the Year for Region 2, and Cathy Thomas, principal of Cromwell Valley Elementary Regional Magnet, has been named Principal of the Year for Region 2 by Magnet Schools of America.

The region encompasses schools in Delaware, Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Washington, D.C., and West Virginia, as well as international schools.

From the seven regional winners in each of the Teacher of the Year and Principal of the Year categories, Magnet Schools of America will select its national winners, to be announced during the closing reception of its annual conference. Baltimore County Public Schools is serving as the host of the 37th Annual Magnet Schools of America National Conference to be held at the Waterfront Marriott Hotel in Baltimore from Wednesday, April 10, to Saturday, April 13.

Carter, an ASE certified technician since 1985, has been teaching for 12 years, all of them at Milford Mill Academy. The school has selected him as its own Teacher of the Year for 2019. From 2008 – 2014, he served on Maryland’s curriculum writing committee for automotive technology.

“I became an educator,” Carter wrote, “because I wanted to share my passion for anything that had an engine with today's youth. I have always enjoyed working with young people and have deep rooted beliefs about giving back when you have the means or opportunity to do so. I found my calling later in life, and this has become my one true regret. I guess I never listened to the whole money can't make you happy thing. My last job has become my best job, I just wish it had been my first job.”

Carter has worked to expand employment opportunities for his students and graduates including working with the Mile One Group to extend their hiring age to 17.

Cathy Thomas

Thomas, in May 2018, was named Elementary Principal of the Year by BCPS. Thomas joined the county school system in 1991 as a Grade 1 teacher at Bear Creek Elementary. She taught in elementary and middle schools before becoming assistant principal at Ridgely Middle, principal of Scholars K-8 (a now closed charter school), and then principal of Cromwell Valley.

A magnet school, Cromwell focuses on STEAM – science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics studies. In 2018, the school was named a National Magnet School of Excellence by Magnet Schools of America.

“What makes CVE an exciting place for students to learn and grow,” said Thomas, “is our belief that all students benefit from a learning environment where student inquiry is valued and fostered through opportunities for collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking. Additionally, we believe that strong partnerships with families and other schools across the county strengthen our [science, technology, engineering, and mathematics] magnet theme and ultimately the achievement of our students.”

During the Magnet Schools of America conference, more than 1,000 magnet educators are expected to participate in sessions on best practices, hear from keynote speakers, and network with one another. Conference attendees will have the opportunity to participate in 22 tours of Baltimore County schools and will enjoy performances by BCPS students and presentations on the school system’s innovative practices.
