Interim Superintendent honored by Baltimore Tuskegee Alumni Association, Foundation

TOWSON, MD – Before an audience of nearly 400 guests and in front of her family, Baltimore County Public Schools Interim Superintendent Verletta White was honored for preparing students for college and career success.

The award was presented by the Baltimore Tuskegee Alumni Association and the Baltimore Tuskegee Alumni Foundation at their 37th Annual Carver-Washington Scholarship Awards Breakfast, held at The Forum in Baltimore City on Saturday, Feb. 9.

The award White received is presented annually to Baltimore-area individuals who exhibit the values of Dr. George Washington Carver and Dr. Booker T. Washington. In accepting the award, White shared her appreciation for their legacies.

“Both men demonstrated the highest standards for academic excellence, and I am deeply humbled to be recognized in their names," White said. “We are following in their example by raising our graduation rate and closing the graduation rate gap between African American and white students—something that few large school systems have done. But I never forget my mother’s wise words. Getting students across the stage is just our reasonable service. I am passionate about graduating every student with not only a diploma, but also a resume."

At the breakfast, awards also were presented to Rev. Dr. Douglas B. Sands, Sr., pastor of White Rock Independent Methodist Episcopal Church, and Dr. David Wilson, president of Morgan State University. Proceeds from the breakfast will be used to provide scholarships to Baltimore-area students attending Tuskegee University.

Located in Alabama, Tuskegee University is an HBCU (Historically Black College and University) founded in 1881 by the legendary educator and presidential advisor Dr. Booker T. Washington.
