West Towson Elementary named National Blue Ribbon School

School becomes the 21st in BCPS to earn this honor

Towson, MD – West Towson Elementary School, which was awarded a Maryland Blue Ribbon last year, today was named a 2018 National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education.

“I am so very proud of the students, teachers, and families at West Towson,” said Principal Sue Hershfeld. “The key to our success is the powerful sense of WTES teamwork and community.Families care deeply about the education that their children receive and support the work of the teachers.Dedicated teachers know their students well, build positive relationships, and work together to provide their students with rigorous and relevant instruction each day.”

“West Towson Elementary School opened eight years ago, and in less than a decade, has distinguished itself as a provider of high-quality, engaging instruction,” said Interim Superintendent Verletta White. “Principal Sue Hershfeld and her team have created a positive culture and climate focused on equity and literacy in all subject areas.”

National Blue Ribbon Schools can be honored on the basis of high achievement or significant improvement. West Towson was selected in the category of exemplary high achieving school, having scored in the top 15 percent of all Maryland schools on the 2017 state assessments. An average of 79% of all West Towson Elementary students met or exceeded expectations in math and English language arts.

In total, 24 BCPS schools have earned Maryland Blue Ribbons, with 21 of those going on to earn National Blue Ribbon honors. Schools previously designated as National Blue Ribbon Schools in Baltimore County include Carroll Manor, Chadwick, Charlesmont, Middlesex, Pine Grove, Red House Run, Riderwood, Seventh District, Sparks, Summit Park, Timonium, and Woodholme elementary schools; Dumbarton, Hereford, and Ridgely middle schools; and Eastern Tech, George Washington Carver Center, Hereford, Towson, and Western Tech high schools.

Hershfeld will represent West Towson Elementary in Washington, D.C., for award ceremonies to be held on Wednesday, Nov. 7 and Thursday, Nov. 8.
