BCPS swears in Baltimore County Student Councils leadership for 2018-19

TOWSON, MD — BCPS Interim Superintendent Verletta White officially welcomed dozens of Baltimore County middle and high school students into the ranks of student leadership during the Baltimore County Student Councils’ executive board swearing-in ceremony Thursday evening.

As family members and educators looked on, White and BCSC President Ruben Amaya took turns fastening BCSC leadership pins onto the lapels and dresses of each of the students who took an oath of office administered earlier by White. The ceremony honored students who will be holding posts within BCSC leadership ranging from middle school liaisons and student training coordinators to BCSC Chief of Staff and Student Member of the Board of Education of Baltimore County.

Those BCSC officers honored Thursday are:

  • Samantha Warfel, Hereford Middle – 2nd Vice President

  • Sophia Rienzi, George Washington Carver Center for Arts and Technology – Charity
  • Sofia Grose, Towson High – Charity
  • Robert Meloni, Dulaney High – Educational Liaison
  • Janna Rus, Carver Center – Educational Liaison
  • Nadia Nazar, Eastern Technical High – Environmental Affairs
  • Shakhnoza Salimjonova, Eastern Technical High – Environmental Affairs
  • Mary Kumcheva, Eastern Technical High – Evaluations Coordinator
  • Brooke Wilson, Hereford High – Evaluations Coordinator

Amaya also secured an honorary leadership pin to Interim Superintendent White for her contributions to student leadership and support of the BCSC.

In remarks, White encouraged each of the student leaders – and their families – to reflect on the importance of their roles in representing all 114,000 students in Baltimore County Public Schools. Amaya amplified upon that theme in his remarks, telling students that despite the hard work and sacrifice involved, each should take time to listen to all student voices and strive to include everyone.

The ceremony took place at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Parkville and featured a dinner for participants.

The Baltimore County Student Councils is a student-led organization that supports school administrators, the Board of Education of Baltimore County, and the Maryland Association of Student Councils by providing valuable input and feedback on issues that affect all students.
