Carver Center teacher wins top prize in national invention challenge

Competition part of National Summer Teacher Institute sponsored by Patent Office and University of South Florida

Jennifer McGough
TOWSON, MD — Jennifer McGough and her two teammates won the Best Overall Invention prize during the National Summer Teacher Institute, hosted by the United States Patent and Trademark Office and the University of South Florida’s College of Education.

McGough, a technology teacher and work-based learning coordinator at George Washington Carver Center for Arts and Technology, was one of 50 teachers (selected from 250 applicants) to participate in the all-expenses-paid summer institute, held July 29 – Aug. 3 at the University of South Florida in Tampa.

McGough’s team, The Queen Bees, included a teacher from Georgia and another from Washington State. Their award-winning invention is a bee-themed timer that parents can use to help their children transition from one activity to another.

Entering her third year as an engineering teacher at Carver Center, McGough previously was a middle school science teacher. Regarding her transition, McGough said, “The incorporation of math and science into the hands-on engineering projects allowed students to really apply concepts to real-world scenarios. Students were engaged, and it was so much fun to see their designs come to fruition. I was hooked. I became certified in technology education and have looked for opportunities to grow as a teacher in this field. I love the innovation, the problem-solving, and the creativity that goes hand in hand with engineering and therefore jumped at the opportunity to apply to a Teacher’s Institute that is focused on innovation, while educating teachers about intellectual property. “
