Parent University Workshop: Learn how to interpret PARCC scoring sheets

What: Parents are invited to a free BCPS Parent University workshop called A Walk in the PARCC. At this workshop, parents will learn more about how to interpret PARCC scoring sheets, online tools, and more. Please register by contacting Rai Cary at 443-809-4496 or rcary@bcps.org.

First day of Summer Band Camp at Randallstown High

What: The Golden Ram Marching Band of Randallstown High School will host a Summer Band Camp. Musicians at all levels of experience are invited. Flag line, dance, and drum line positions are limited. Instrumentalists are encouraged to bring an instrument. All drummers must bring a pair of Vic Firth MS2 drum sticks.
When: Monday, Aug. 13 to Friday, Aug. 17, from 8 a.m. – 3 p.m.

What: BCPS Parent University and the CCBC Family Literacy ESOL Program are hosting free classes to help non-native English speaking adults learn English language skills for life and work and civic concepts. Please register by contacting Caroline Ko at 443-840-3748 or cko@ccbcmd.edu.

School libraries offer summer hours, activities at Chadwick, Halstead, Pinewood

What: School’s out for summer (mostly), but many Baltimore County public school libraries are still in! This year, 25 Baltimore County Public Schools elementary school libraries are offering special summer hours during which students can check out books, write stories, use computers, and engage in makerspace and other activities.

BCPS to welcome newest hires at New Teacher Orientation

What: Baltimore County Public Schools will hold its annual New Teacher Orientation program – "Success from the Start"— to welcome more than 900 teachers and other school professionals new to BCPS. For the first day of orientation, teachers will report to their schools for professional development activities. On the second day of the program, August 15, Superintendent Verletta White, County Executive Don Mohler, Board Chair Edward Gilliss, Esq., and TABCO President Abby Beytin will offer greetings during the opening session. Participants will spend the second and third days attending sessions at Perry Hall High School on equity, classroom management, professional conduct, and other topics. . In addition to teachers, newly-hired nurses, occupational and physical therapists, psychologists, counselors, social workers, behavior interventionists, and speech and language pathologists will participate in the orientation.

Judy Center and county library’s Bookmobile to visit two Woodlawn apartment complexes

What: To support the county’s youngest learners, the Judy Center at Campfield Early Learning Center and the Baltimore County Public Library’s Bookmobile have teamed up to make special weekly visits to two area apartment complexes.

Those most needed are: 3-ring binders, markers, pencils, notebooks, crayons, colored pencils, erasers, scissors, sticky notes, folders, notebook paper, dividers, pens, rulers, glue/glue sticks, pencil cases, book bags, and reward stickers.

What: Students who have completed their graduation requirements over the summer will gather for a formal commencement ceremony featuring Superintendent Verletta White.

Give to Tools for Schools, the annual school supply drive

What: YOU can help ensure that all students get off to a great start next school year by participating inThe Education Foundation of Baltimore County Public Schoolsannual school supply drive – Tools for Schools. This year, there are multiple ways organizations and individuals can help – fromhosting a school supply drive, volunteering time, or making amonetary donation. All school supplies are welcome. Those most needed are: 3-ring binders, markers, pencils, notebooks, crayons, colored pencils, erasers, scissors, sticky notes, folders, notebook paper, dividers, pens, rulers, glue/glue sticks, pencil cases, book bags, and reward stickers. In addition to signing up online to help, interested businesses/organizations can sign up by contacting Cindy Whitcomb atcwhitcomb@bcps.org. The school supply drive is part of the BCPS annualBack to School Involves You, Too! campaignin association with the Education Foundation of BCPS. Designed to garner community support for BCPS students and schools, the campaign this year also includes BCPSFest (a back-to-school festival), BCPS Day at Camden Yards, Early Entry Day, and more.

Visit Slice on Thursdays and 25% of your purchase will be donated to The Education Foundation of BCPS.)

Ticket and tee shirt sales continue for BCPS Day at the Yard

What: Buy your tickets now for the annual BCPS Day at the Yard. Five dollars from each ticket sold will support student leadership programs in Baltimore County schools. BCPS Day at the Yard is Wednesday, Aug. 29, and the Orioles will be up against the Blue Jays. Game start is 7:05 p.m. Ticket prices range from $17 - $33, andtickets must be purchased online. Limited editionshirtsare also available. A portion of each shirt sale will benefit BCPS student leadership programs.

County Health Department Back-to-School Immunizations

What: The Baltimore County Health Department is accepting walk-ins for school immunizations at all seven of its health centers. If children are not properly immunized by Monday, Sept. 24, they will be excluded from school. For more information, call 410.887.2705.

County library’s Summer Reading Program continues

What: The Baltimore County Public Library’sannual summer reading programoffers reading incentives, challenges, events, and more for children of every age and for adults. The theme for this year is Libraries Rock!

Free lunches served at Baltimore County public library branches

What: Baltimore County Public Library branches are offering free lunches to youth this summer at select locations. Those 18 years old and younger are provided with free lunches in conjunction with the Baltimore County Public Schools Office of Food and Nutrition Services. Lunch consists of a deli sandwich, fruit or vegetable, juice or frozen treat, and milk. From Monday, July 9 through Friday, Aug. 3, selected BCPS schools will serve free breakfast and lunch to young people 18 years old and younger. (Baltimore County Public Library and BCPS are equal opportunity providers. This program is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.)
