10 things you might not know about this year’s BCPSFest

Lots will be new at this year’s back to school festival

TOWSON, MD —In less than three weeks, Baltimore County Public Schools will celebrate the upcoming school year with its biggest and best back-to-school festival ever -- BCPSFest. The festival will be held on Saturday, Aug. 25, from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m., on the lower parking lot at Boscov’s at White Marsh Mall.

Here are 10 new additions to this year’s free festival:

  1. The first 250 students to visit at least 10 booths will receive a small gift pack of school supplies.
  2. The Colgate Bright Smiles, Bright Futures®mobile dental van is joining the festival this year and offering free dental screenings and information.
  3. Irvine Nature Center, also new to the festival this year, will engage children in simple nature crafts and introduce them to a few animal friends.
  4. First Financial Federal Credit Union, a longtime BCPS partner, will give away free books and provide a comfy place for students to sit and read while at the festival.
  5. The BCPS Office of Physical Education will give away free jump ropes and challenge festival-goers to show off their jump-roping skills.
  6. A storytime tent, coordinated by BCPS Library Media Programs, will feature special guests (including Superintendent Verletta White and WBAL-TV reporter Tim Tooten) reading to children of all ages. A raffle will be held in the tent for a large stuffed animal provided by Boscov’s.
  7. Do you think you can dance? The BCPS Office of Music and Dance Education will challenge festival-goers with the Wheel of Dance.
  8. At the iFly Baltimore booth, festival-goers can build parachutes and watch them in action in a wind tunnel simulator.
  9. Show off your BCPS pride! For only $5 you can go home with a new Proud BCPS Alumni pennant. Proceeds will support BCPS student leadership programs.
  10. Parents can learn more about the new Baltimore County Cares for Kids program by stopping by the Office of Food and Nutrition Services booth. Through this initiative, when Baltimore County families fill out the meal eligibility form this fall, all students who qualify – including those eligible for meals at a reduced cost – will receive meals at no cost in addition to other benefits.
And that’s not all… the festival will feature student entertainers, an antique fire engine, the Mobile Innovation Lab, the BCPS Parentmobile, the county library’s Bookmobile, information about BCPS and community programs and services, and much more. See a complete list of festival vendors online.

This event is sponsored by The Education Foundation of Baltimore County Public Schools and is part of Back to School Involves You, Too!, which invites the entire community to celebrate the start of the school year. In addition to the Tools for Schools school supply drive and BCPSFest, the initiative features Team BCPS Night at the Yard.
