Student Accounts offer BCPS students more access to county library resources

When Student Accounts were announced last fall, Interim Superintendent Verletta White, described them as yet another way to extend learning for Baltimore County Public Schools students. As summer approaches and as National School Library Month comes to a close, Fran Glick, BCPS coordinator for library media programs and digital resources, wants to remind students and their parents to take full advantage of all the student accounts offer.

Student Accounts are just one aspect of S.A.I.L. – Students Achieve in Libraries – a comprehensive partnership between Baltimore County Public Library and BCPS school libraries.

Student Accounts allow BCPS students to check out five print or audio books without late fees and unlimited digital resources. Students use their BCPS One card or student identification number to access the resources in person at all county library branches, and use their student identification number for access through the BCPL website. While borrowing privileges may be blocked due to unreturned items (30 days after an item is due), accounts will always offer access to online resources and databases.

According to BCPL, as of March 31, BCPS students have used their Student Accounts for more than 10,330 check outs and more than 4,700 log-ins. Elementary school students, thus far, are the most frequent users of Student Accounts.

“We are proud to provide increased access to students through this collaboration,” said Glick. “We see data regarding student access and usage and are confident that it is making an impact on the literacy needs of our students.”
