BCPS announces STAR Awards for February

The STAR Awards program recognizes support employees who go above and beyond the call of duty in performing their job responsibilities.

Nominees are evaluated based on the following criteria:

  • Made significant contributions improving job efficiency, quality of services, safety or conserving resources
  • Performed a humanitarian or heroic act
  • Responded proactively by anticipating needs and solving problems without specific direction

Lyn Kinnear, Administrative Assistant, George Washington Carver Center for Arts and Technology

One of Kinnear’s greatest strengths is addressing student, parent, staff and other stakeholder concerns with respect. Even during challenging situations, she communicates effectively. Plus, her constant positivity improves the school’s climate. An expert at BCPS policy and procedures, she is able to speak with authority about the policies that govern Carver’s actions as a school.

Patricia Longest, Cafeteria Worker, Pine Grove Middle

Longest is an outstanding team member in the cafeteria and a noted multitasker. Her work is consistent, and she is a terrific team player. She helps her colleagues when they need it and her work area is consistently neat, organized and clean.

Nancy Pollom, Additional Adult Assistant, Oliver Beach Elementary

Pollom provides support to one student and holds him responsible for completing his work. She maintains open communication with both home and school staff. In her free time, Pollom creates visual supports. When her student moves on to middle school next year, he will take with him a binder of cues and reminders that Pollom created for him.

Brian Walker, Paraeducator, Sollers Point Technical High

Walker supports students in mathematics and is in his second year at Sollers Point. He provides students with quick reviews. He successfully implemented a real-life example into lessons that helped students comprehend new content. Walker is also a track and field coach at Dundalk High.
