Milford Mill senior Christiona Harris featured in national story about aspiring doctors

Christiona Harris, a Milford Mill Academy senior and aspiring pediatric trauma surgeon, is featured in a story about efforts to increase the number of African American and Latino students seeking careers in the medical field. The story can be seen and heard here.

Described by Assistant Principal Adrian V. Charley as “a remarkable young woman,” Harris studies in Milford’s health sciences magnet program and has received academic scholarship offers from institutions including Spelman College and Hampton University.

The story describes Harris’s involvement in a program called MERIT, which encourages black and Latino students to pursue careers as doctors, medical examiners, and public health leaders. During the school year, MERIT scholars spend Saturday mornings taking classes on preparing for college, exploring health careers, and understanding the role race plays in health care. In the summers, the scholars are paid interns in area hospitals and laboratories.

Marketplace is produced and distributed by American Public Media, in association with the University of Southern California. Marketplace programs are broadcast by nearly 800 public radio stations nationwide across the United States and are heard by more than 12 million weekly listeners.
