Academic achievements

The school has a thriving National Junior Honor Society chapter.

Recent awards or grants

Sparrows Point Middle received a Clean Green 15 grant to support environmental activities.

The Education Foundation of Baltimore County Public Schools support the school’s Bringing Learning to Life program, which enriches classroom learning with community resources and institutions.

Special academic programs

Sparrows Point is a Lighthouse middle school, fully participating in the S.T.A.T., Students and Teachers Accessing Tomorrow, initiative to support personalized learning with technology.

Bringing Learning to Life is a program in which Sparrows Point Middle School strategically invites community resources into the school to add dimension to the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), English, social studies, art, and health curricula. In addition to gaining essential background knowledge and multiple perspectives on academic content, students are making personal connections with venerable local institutions such as the Maryland Historical Society, The Mary Surratt House, and The Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History and Culture.

Popular/unique extracurricular activities

Popular extracurricular activities at Sparrows Point include the N.E.R.D. Club, Running Club, badminton, newspaper, Drama Club, and Art Club.

For faculty and staff, wellness activities include yoga and Zumba with Brick Bodies.

Special school traditions

The school has held an annual Math Clash every year since about 1986.

One of Sparrow’s Point Spirit Days is Camouflage Day, “due to the high number of students in the area who are avid hunters!”

“The school’s strong level of community involvement is a tradition. Evidence of the community’s support is the work neighbors did on our courtyard project!”

Bet you didn’t know…

That “we share a building with Sparrows Point High School.”

That “we can see the Chesapeake Bay (specifically Back River) from our windows...and we once saw a water spout!”

That “many of our students have parents, grandparents, and some great-grandparents who attended our school. We are currently working with 5th generation students.”
