Father figures receive support, guidance at Powerful M.I.N.D. Workshop

Father figures from all over the county came out to gain insight about the best ways to reach their children and help them to succeed.

Parents from Scotts Branch, Hebbville, Woodmoor, Johnnycake, Powhatan, Church Lane, and Featherbed Lane elementary schools were encouraged to attend the Powerful M.I.N.D. (Men Involved In Nurturing Dreams) workshop, where they listened to multiple speakers and discussed multiple topics including; literacy and freedom, financial freedom, healthy relationships, and second chances.

Superintendent Dance was the keynote speaker for the evening and talked about the importance of positive male role models in the lives of children, especially in the lives of young men.

“If we can give our kids someone positive to look up to, they are more likely to follow the example of that person and adopt those positive habits,” Dance said.

More than 50 people attended the workshop, and Dawn Mears, parent service coordinator for Scotts Branch Elementary, hopes to have an even higher turnout next year.

“We had such a large turn out this year, it was much larger than last year, and hopefully it’ll be even bigger next year,” Mears said. “I’m hoping to get more men involved in the lives of our kids, and not just dads, but granddads, uncles, and godfathers. Our young men especially need that support.”
