Halethorpe Elementary School students participate in mentoring partnership with UMBC

Students at Halethorpe Elementary School are working closely with the student athletes at University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). The Community Outreach Coordinator at UMBC, Kelly Fahey, and Halethorpe's School Counselor, Gina Vernier, have developed a mentoring program that has allowed Halethorpe students to meet with the UMBC student athletes once or twice a week, with a purpose of promoting academic, and personal growth.

UMBC athletes serve as positive role models by talking with Halethorpe students about the importance of physical fitness and education, as well as time management, goal setting, and developing healthy relationships. Their presence has helped students to understand the importance of hard work and dedication and has developed college and career awareness among Halethorpe students.
