The proceeds from an event sponsored by the Carson Scholars Fund and the Hillendale Country Club Ladies' Book Club will fully fund a $15,000 reading room at Dogwood Elementary School. The reading room is expected to be completed by February 2014.

Through the Ben Carson Reading Project, 88 Ben Carson Reading Rooms have been created serving students in 12 states.

The event featured a book signing by Dr. Ben Carson, silent and live auctions, a raffle and dinner. Among the special guests in attendance were Dr. Carson, who spoke about his recent book, America the Beautiful, and his wife Candy, who spoke on the importance of reading rooms as safe, nurturing spaces to promote literacy. They were joined by Dogwood Elementary School Principal Betty Pettiford, Assistant Principal Laura McNulty, and two Baltimore County Carson Scholars.
