Newest BCPS Board of Education members sworn in

The oath of office is short for becoming a member of the Board of Education of Baltimore County – just 77 words. But by reciting those words before the county's Clerk of Court in recent days, three appointees (and one returning member) officially joined the 12-member board and will begin terms ranging from five years for most and one year for the student member.

The new members were selected and announced in June by Gov. Martin O'Malley.

  • Student member Jonathan P. Galla is a rising senior at Hereford High School and a member of the National Honors Society, Mu Alpha Theta mathematics honors society and the Tri-M music honors society. He plays the violin for several orchestras, including the BCPS All-Honors Orchestra and Side-by-Side with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. He is vice president of the Hereford High School Gay-Straight Alliance and treasurer of the school's Student Council.
  • Edward J. Gilliss represents Council district five on the board and practices civil litigation, administrative law and wills and estate administration as a partner with the Royston, Mueller, McLean & Reid law firm in Towson. He is vice chairman of the board for the University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center and recently served as chairman of the Baltimore County Planning Board and county attorney for Baltimore County.

  • Marisol A. Johnson is an at-large member of the board and owner and CEO of The Johnson Insurance and Financial Service Agency. She is an active member in the Parent Teacher Association at Summit Park Elementary School and serves as an advisory board member for the Youth Dreamers of Baltimore, a board member for the Druid Heights Community Center and a member of the Baltimore County Chamber of Commerce.
  • David Uhlfelder begins his second five-year term as an at-large member. He is a certified public accountant and president of the David Uhlfelder, P.A., accounting and management consulting firm.

Johnson and Galla joined Uhlfelder at a swearing-in ceremony in the office of Clerk of Court Julie Ensor on July 2. Surrounded by family and friends, each took the oath and signed the official records making their appointments official. The ceremony was also attended by BCPS Superintendent Dr. Dallas Dance and members of his staff and Board members Mike Bowler and Romaine Williams. Gilliss was sworn into his new post earlier in the summer.

The newly reconstituted Board will hold its first meeting on Tuesday, July 9, at George Washington Carver Center for Arts and Technology in Towson.
