In Bianca Crockett’s kindergarten class, learning doesn’t mean sitting behind a desk. The West Towson Elementary School teacher integrates fitness into her lesson plans to keep students active and engaged, believing in the motto “Healthy Minds + Fit Bodies = Happy Kids.”

This spring, Crockett’s innovative work to support active learning led her to be named one of Adventure to Fitness’s 2012-2013 National Champions of Education and Fitness. She’s one of five educators in Maryland to receive the distinction.

"Mrs. Bianca Crockett and West Towson Elementary are among the pioneering educators focusing on ways to integrate children's academic learning, health and well-being. We commend their efforts and encourage other teachers and schools across the nation to follow their lead," said Colleen Henckels, Vice President of Marketing at Adventure to Fitness.

With childhood obesity rates on the rise, Crockett took a 21st century approach to active learning. In the classroom, she uses interactive fitness videos that integrate physical activity with health instruction and lessons in math, science, social studies and language arts. The videos keep kids moving while they’re learning—actively engaging students in their own health education.

Crockett was presented with her award via Skype Monday, May 6, 2013.

Adventure to Fitness is an educational fitness program that provides free fitness instruction to classrooms nationwide. The program has been adopted by elementary schools in all 50 states and reaches up to 7 million kids per week. For more information, go to http://www.adventuretofitness.com.
