Every year the Baltimore County Public Schools' Department of Technology holds a potluck holiday luncheon to thank staff for their hard work and accomplishments. This year the staff decided to add another element to the luncheon as a way to spread the true meaning of the season – Gifts for Halstead.

In the past, throughout the year the department participated in various community giving events, as they were encouraged to do so by their coworker and friend, Karon Cubbage, a 22-year veteran of BCPS.  Sadly, Karon, passed away in June 2012 after a long illness. In honor of her truly giving spirit, the Department of Technology partnered with Halstead Academy of Art and Science to provide gifts to elementary school students in need of additional joy this holiday season. After working with the school, 32 elementary school students were selected to receive gifts.

After only a day and a half of notifying staff, there were 32 gift-sponsor volunteers. Department of Technology staff served as elves collecting, wrapping, and delivering gifts to Halstead.  The principal and social worker then distributed the gifts so that the givers and receivers remained anonymous.

When the gifts were delivered to the school, Principal Jennifer Mullenax said, "I am speechless… The generosity of the Department of Technology staff is beyond words. The boys and girls were beside themselves and truly grateful. Boys and girls who oftentimes show little emotion were ecstatic.  In fact, one of the students said, 'WOW, they would never have done this at my old school!' … This is truly TEAM BCPS at its finest! "

As one Department of Technology staff person said, "It's been an incredible blessing to take part in this event.  Not only will our students hopefully be uplifted at a time when they may need it most, but the overwhelming response from staff has demonstrated that our employees are also experiencing and spreading the true holiday spirit."

"I know you all feel as I do" said Department of Technology Manager Dan Scroggs, "that even though this may be a blessing for these children, it is each of us who feels truly blessed having the opportunity to make a positive difference (no matter how small) in a child's life."
