In pursuit of a Math Night that would really help students make connections between what they learn at school and how it is used in the real world, Woodbridge Elementary School and Giant Foods of Catonsville worked together to create an event that was truly memorable.  On the evening of Wednesday, October 17, teachers, students, and families met to apply math skills to the experience of grocery shopping. Giant Foods allowed everyone in attendance to browse the aisles, activities in hand, to solve problems and work with one another while having fun at the same time.

Teachers prepared activities for each grade level that involved counting, determining weight, price comparisons, and using addition to tally quantities and totals.  Parents and teachers guided students through the tasks and aisles taking advantage of every teachable moment.

While primary students enjoyed the help of their elders, some intermediate students found opportunities to help one another and compare data.  One could literally see the math unfold as students calculated and wrote answers to the problems before them.

The time passed quickly but even in the final moments students were smiling as Giant generously provided healthy goodie bags for all students to take home with treats and school supplies. Woodbridge is very grateful to Giant for hosting this excellent event and to teachers, students, and families for taking the time to make this night a success!
