Artist-in-residence teaches Stoneleigh Elementary students about African dance

In just two weeks with special artist-in-residence Ssuuna, Grade 2 students at Stoneleigh Elementary School learned to beat out drum rhythms and to recreate dances of traditional and modern East Africa.

Ssuuna, an African dancer, drummer, and singer, worked with Stoneleigh students from October 18 to November 1. Through music and movement, he shared with the students lessons about African life, for example, how traditional values like respect and gratitude are passed on through song and story, and how the Amagunju dance evolved as a way to soothe an infant king.
