At Hereford Middle School, kids have been busy investigating the wide world of robotics at the second annual summer camp sponsored by Hereford Zone Robotics.
Through hands-on work, students heading into Grades 5–7 spent the week of August 6–10, 2012, learning how to program robots and applying their new skills to compete in fun challenges. Students from Prettyboy, Jacksonville, and Sparks elementary schools and Hereford Middle School will wrap up the week on Friday with a final event that combines all their new skills in machine construction, programming, strategy, and teamwork.
During the week, the camp has also put a spotlight on future careers in robotics and related fields and has integrated the content and skills of science, technology, engineering, and math. Campers also have eagerly followed the big global event of the landing of the NASA spacecraft Curiosity, and discussed how the work they are doing in the camp is directly related to problems and solutions that NASA engineers have encountered.
