Art students at Holabird Middle created a large mosaic out of 5300 plastic bottle caps. Students, teachers, parents and community members collected caps during the first half of the year. Then students competed to have their designs chosen. Brent Silvestri, an 8th grader, was the winner and drew his design on four plywood panels. Students then worked in groups to attach the caps to the plywood. They learned about teamwork, patience, persistence and how to turn trash into treasure. The mosaic, hung in the school's cafeteria in March, will be a permanent installation.
