At Stemmers Run Middle School, students are scoring big points during Sunday Ravens games.  Ali Burke, teacher and language arts chairman, leads her students to certain victory by inviting them to participate in the SRMS Sunday Homework Club.  Instead of footballs, helmets, and shoulder pads, SRMS students have access to computers, books, and other resource materials they may not have access to outside of school.  Points are accumulated not on scoreboards, but on report cards in the form of higher grades on projects, quizzes, benchmarks and assessments.

“I wanted to help students who may have a negative perception of school,” explains Mrs. Burke.  “This program allows the student to catch up or even move ahead with the week’s work.  It allows them to begin experiencing the feeling of success by being able to hand in completed assignments on time and also having a better understanding of concepts being taught during class.”

Mrs. Burke and her team do their best to make the learning environment as comfortable as possible for their students.  As the Sunday Ravens game is being shown on the library projector, students are able to work at tables independently or cooperatively with peers and teachers.

Students are actually excited to have the opportunity to work together on the weekends.

SRMS staff members Vicki Hicks, NKenge Barker, Brian Muffoletto and many others freely give their time to help SRMS students successfully reach the high standards of BCPS and state performance level standards.

Mr. Jay Ward, principal of Stemmers Run Middle, proudly adds, “This is a great effort on behalf of our students by several dedicated teachers.  They are taking their time to do beyond what is expected so that students succeed.  It is just another example of the great teamwork that takes place at SRMS!”
