Thirty female students from Old Court Middle School participated in the “Expanding Your Horizons” math and science career and discovery day for middle school girls at Stevenson University. The event, held on Sunday, October 2, and co-coordinated by Stevenson University and the Baltimore Branch of the American Association of University Women, was designed to increase interest in science and mathematics-related careers and to introduce students to women working in those fields.
The students from Old Court Middle were able to choose from a variety of hands-on workshops on topics ranging from “DNA Detectives” to “Spaghetti Engineering.”
The keynote speaker brought live animals to the event – including chinchillas, snakes, ferrets, turtles, a hedgehog, and a parrot – to allow the girls to see animals that have been saved as a result of conservation efforts.
The students enjoyed a full day of activities and information, and many of them gained a new-found perspective on math and science-based careers.
