Perry Hall High National Honor Society Honored by the Baltimore Ravens

Spirit erupted from their voices and adrenaline rushed through their veins as the Maynard E. Keadle Chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS) at Perry Hall High School stepped on the field at M&T Bank Stadium. Honored by the Governor’s Office through the Baltimore Ravens Honor Rows Program for their commitment to serving the community, the group was provided 95 tickets for the October 2 game. But before the Ravens could defeat the Jets, the group had a true on-field experience, watching Joe Flacco warm up just mere yards away.

As the game got underway, members were motivated by the color choice of the night: pink. Players embellished their uniforms with pink as the marching band formed a pink ribbon during their performance.

“The amount of energy that filled the stadium as breast cancer survivors walked the field was very inspiring. It put a reason to why we do the Race for the Cure,” said Lydia Howard, NHS secretary.

Race for the Cure is just one of the several activities that the society annually takes part in. They sponsor the school wide Link Sale to raise money for the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center, raising more than $40,000 in the last four years. The group also assists the local community by raking leaves for the surrounding neighborhoods, collecting “Coats for Kids,” as well as tutoring struggling students within the school.

Their extensive service was truly rewarded as the group was featured on the JumboTron during third quarter.

“After the second field goal, I looked down the row and all the students had their arms up and were cheering,” said Annie Krall, NHS adviser. “We don’t do it for the rewards, but I know they enjoyed it.”

As the clock approached midnight, the buses pulled into the school’s parking lot as thoughts turned to the upcoming Coat Drive.
