What did you do during your summer vacation?
For at least 170 Villa Cresta Elementary School students, the answer is that they kept right on learning.
As a reward for completing the school’s annual summer learning challenge, these students were surprised on September 7 with an ice cream sundae party with special guest Poe, the mascot of the Baltimore Ravens.
At the beginning of the summer, all Villa Cresta Elementary students receive a long checklist of ways that they can have fun and continue to learn over the summer. Along with many other possibilities, this list includes:
 |
- Taking a hike
- Stargazing
- Visiting the Maryland Science Center
- Attending story hours at local bookstore
- Taking a long car ride
- Keeping track of the Baltimore Orioles wins and losses
- Going beachcombing and drawing the shells and other objects found
- Memorizing three poems with a friend
- Creating a family tree
- Catching their moms reading or writing
- Writing a letter to their favorite authors
- Rewriting a picture book
- Writing a new ending for a book
- Developing a crossword puzzle
- Creating a puppet show
- Identifying things that can be recycled
- Creating a weather chart
- Tracking the moon for one week
- Doing push-ups or sit ups every day, and making a chart of progress
- Taking a calculator to the grocery store to keep a running tab of expected total
- Measuring things around the home and then ranking them by length
- Practicing math facts (again!)
