At the Regional MATHCOUNTS® competition on Saturday, February 5, at Perry Hall High School, the team from Hereford Middle School placed second, which qualifies them to compete in the state MATHCOUNTS competition to be held at Johns Hopkins University on March 19.

The Hereford Middle School team consists of Subhashini Arumugam, Coby Nettleton, Robbie Palmisano, Josh Weiss, Hunter Field, Quincy Kahlert, Ryan Pindale, and David Rus.

Nettleton and Weiss were also honored for placing in the top 16 of all 160 competitors at the event. The competition included students from 30 schools in Baltimore County, Baltimore City, Harford County, Howard County, and Cecil County.

The MATHCOUNTS competition consists of fun and creative problems that promote critical-thinking and problem-solving skills. The MATHCOUNTS competitions have written and oral rounds, as well as individual and team components. The competition problems focus on the grade 6 through 8 standards of the National Council of Teachers in Mathematics.

MATHCOUNTS provides the materials for teachers and students to use as they prepare for the competition. Participants advance through school, chapter and state competitions until the final 224 students are selected from 56 states and territories to advance to the MATHCOUNTS National Competition held each May. The National Competition adds an additional individual component called the Masters Round.
