Hernwood Elementary students run "Miles for Math"

This fall at Hernwood Elementary School, 30 students in grades 4 and 5 participated in the second season of the Hernwood Running Club, “Miles of Math.”  Math and reading were incorporated into running practices, held twice a week.

“I found articles written for kids related to healthy eating, why physical exercise is important, why drinking fluids is important, as well as other topics,” said instrumental music teacher Shari Schucht.  “We read and discussed these as a group during running club practices.  Word searches were also distributed that relate to health and fitness, character traits, and healthy living.”

The students used rubber bands as lap counters, and then colored in a pie graph slice for every completed lap.  Several students and coaches participated in the Dazzle Dash, a community 1.4 mile race at Symphony Woods in Columbia on Saturday, November 20.

Hernwood's Running club started at the beginning of October and continued until November 23.  The club will start up again in the spring, under the direction of teachers Sandy Fisher and Shari Schucht, as well as school nurse Carla Hynes.
