The Halstead Academy and Pleasant Plains Elementary School have partnered with Randallstown High School, a biomedical magnet school, to develop a science internship program.

The internship experience is based on existing STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) curriculum, “Wee Beasties,” and enables selected Halstead Academy and Pleasant Plains students to partner with student mentors from Randallstown High School to conduct hands-on bioscience investigations.

Participating students travel among the schools but also collaborate throughout the partnership using communication technologies.

spotlightIn October 2010, the Randallstown High students visited both Halstead Academy and Pleasant Plains to perform a science investigation in which the students extracted DNA from strawberries.

On December 13, 2010, Halstead Academy and Pleasant Plains Elementary students visited Randallstown High to work with the high schoolers on animal forensics investigations, at a lab sponsored by The Center for Marine Biology through the Towson University Center for Outreach Education.
