Bear Creek Elementary students celebrate at STEM Fair

On November 30 and December 1, the Bear Creek Elementary School community celebrated the efforts of over 100 fourth and fifth grade scientists at the school’s annual STEM Fair.

Over the course of two days, multiple levels of judging took place. The judges included school faculty, guest dignitaries and educators, personnel from the Baltimore County Public Schools Office of Science, students and teachers from nearby Patapsco High School, and elementary education majors from Towson University.

On Wednesday, December 1, family members were invited to meet all the young scientists and view the outstanding projects at the STEM Fair open house. First, second, and third place winners in both grades 4 and 5 were announced and the winning teams from the grade 3 Safe Racer competition were also on display.

In addition, Bear Creek presented for the first time a Science “Sense”-sational Table. This unique display featured hands-on artifacts and mini-investigations to allow students an opportunity to learn about real-life science. Students had the opportunity to closely observe a variety of objects, read about everyday science, and conduct 2-minute science investigations to explore key elementary science concepts.

School winners go on to compete at the county level in the spring.
