At Imagine Discovery Public Charter School in Woodlawn, the holidays are coming into focus with the study of folktales from around the world, representing various cultures.
Art teacher Jennifer Mesaros and music teacher Jennifer Brumbalow received a grant from the Maryland State Arts Council that allowed them to bring in an artist-in-residence to assist in guiding these studies. As a result, the teachers and their fifth-grade students learned from Carolyn Koerber, a master puppeteer associated with Young Audiences/Arts for Learning – Maryland.
During Koerber’s three-week residency at Imagine Discovery, students created puppetry scenes based on folktales and explored various winter holidays including Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, La Posada, and Christmas.
