A record-setting 96 students were recognized at the tenth annual Spring Principal’s Breakfast on May 17 at Victory Villa Elementary School in Middle River. Students were acknowledged for academic performance, self-development, and/or effort.
“At the end of each quarter we invite parents and guardians to be our guests as their children are honored for their achievements. We understand that support at home impacts upon the child’s success in school,” said Principal Kathleen East. “Some students have been invited to the breakfast each quarter, some students have earned recognition in all three areas, and some students are attending their first Principal’s Breakfast. Our teachers help the students set attainable goals, our parents reinforce their continuous efforts, and our students apply themselves each day.”

Principal East explained that 96 was the highest number of students who earned the recognition since the tradition began at Victory Villa. “It is a principal’s pleasure to find a solution to the problem of finding a space large enough to accommodate more students who earn such recognition. We set the bar high at our school, and we support our students as they work toward this goal.”
Students who achieved recognition in all three areas of academic performance, effort, and self-development were Brittany B., Gabrielle B., Nicolas C., Christopher C., Ashley D., Michael D., Kelly D., Bailey M., Shatia M., Kristen P., Jessica R., and Raeann V. In addition to the home-school family, this breakfast was the result of community support of student achievement. Costco, located on Pulaski Highway, graciously provided the refreshments that each person enjoyed.
“We recognize the challenges that many families face today,” said Regina Haglauer, Costco’s representative. “We are happy to be a part of a program that supports students who establish patterns of success early in their school career.”
The guest speaker for the event was Lee Dingman. He plays the attack position on the Baltimore Bayhawks, the area’s professional lacrosse team. While attending college, Dingman was a three-year letterwinner for Army from 1998 to 2000. He currently serves as a ranger and is a qualified U.S. Army infantry officer stationed at the United States Naval Academy where he teaches leadership classes to freshmen and juniors. Dingman also serves as officer representative of the Navy Lacrosse team. While in Iraq for eight months in 2003, he served with the 101st Pathfinder Company.
Dingman gave autographed posters to all of the participating students. At the end of the program, he remained to sign more autographs for students. He also left behind lacrosse cards and other items for teachers to give as class rewards.
