The Even Start Family Literacy Program of Baltimore County Public Schools held its 8th Annual Reading Makes Cents Read-a-Thon Kick-Off at Cockeysville Middle School on Monday, March 8. The federally funded national program encourages Baltimore County students to raise money in support of literacy by gathering pledges and reading books from March 8 through March 25.
Superintendent Dr. Joe A. Hairston announced the start of the campaign titled “Team Spirit,” and WMAR TV sportscaster Scott Garceau emceed the program. Student team captains from participating schools were honored with certificates and “high fives” from the Ravens’ mascot, Poe. David Bascome, Baltimore Blast player, applauded the students for their commitment to reading.
Following the Kick-Off, students, teachers, guests, and family members were treated to lunch, which was sponsored by local businesses and organizations.
Reading Makes Cents Read-a-Thon is the annual campaign to support Even Start Family Literacy Programs throughout Baltimore County. Even Start is a free family literacy program that utilizes a multifaceted approach to assist parents in gaining life, job, and computer skills. It also promotes school readiness in children and provides parents with resources to strengthen positive attitudes towards reading and writing. The unique nature of this program fights the legacy of illiteracy and advocates significant and lasting improvements for families.
