The
Office of Athletics of Baltimore County Public
Schools presented the Mildred Murray All Academic
Scholar Athlete Award and Scholarship to two
deserving senior athletes at a ceremony held
in the Greenwood Administration Building on
June 3. This year's winners were Laura Shane
from Towson High School who competed in cross
country, indoor track and field, and lacrosse,
and Michael Bauer from Hereford High School
who participated in cross country, indoor track
and field, and outdoor track and field.
The scholarships are given annually to a female and male senior athlete who have maintained a minimum 3.5 unweighted GPA for each quarter and have participated in at least two varsity sports. Each high school in the county participates in the nomination process.
Mrs. Mildred Murray, a former Baltimore County coordinator of athletics and physical education and for whom the award is named, along with Superintendent Dr. Joe A. Hairston presented the $1,000 scholarships and engraved plaques to the students.
During
her 43 years in Baltimore County Public Schools,
Mrs. Murray devoted her efforts to promoting
excellence in athletics and academics. It was
through her endeavors that the system has a
strong foundation for the continued success
of athletic programs in the county and state.
In the fall, Laura S will attend Stanford University and Michael B will attend Duke University.
