For
Eastern Technical High School sophomores K.
Cole and T. Myers, this summer figures to be
an adventure in engineering.
The students, both enrolled in Eastern's engineering
career major, have been accepted in E²@UMD,
a highly-competitive weeklong summer program
for high school females who are considering
engineering as a college major and career -
a field where men traditionally have outnumbered
women.
Students will live on the University of Maryland
campus in College Park and explore the world
of engineering through hands-on activities,
laboratory experiments, informative workshops,
team LEGO challenges, and seminars with professional
engineers. The program will offer students multiple
opportunities to build self-confidence in applying
math, science, and engineering skills.
Eastern's engineering teacher James Matalavage
encouraged the sophomores to apply. The students
completed an application form, obtained recommendation
letters from math, science, and technology teachers,
submitted a transcript showing evidence of high
academic achievement, and wrote a personal essay
explaining how they expected to benefit from
the experience.
The Maryland Space Grant Consortium and the
A. James Clark School of Engineering at the
University of Maryland, College Park, provide
funding for the program. The students will attend
E²@UMD from July 6-12.
