A Dulaney High School homecoming for Maryland’s First Lady served as an American Education Week event for her husband, Governor Robert Ehrlich, and State Superintendent Nancy Grasmick

On November 21, Kendell Ehrlich joined the Governor and Dr. Grasmick in an open and frank discussion about planning for college, the importance of education, and how state government really works. Mrs. Ehrlich shared with the students that she had developed an interest in the law, but that she really had no interest in politics or politicians. Her husband changed her mind by demonstrating to her his sincerity about his chosen vocation.

Governor Ehrlich used the opportunity to encourage students to seek out the true facts of every story in order to get an accurate picture of what is taking place in the world around them. He told the students that just because they read a story in the newspaper, it does not always mean that it is true or accurate.

The Governor asked Dr. Grasmick to share her own life story with the students. She explained how being deaf as a child meant learning how to sign in order to communicate. She told about attending Gallaudet University in Washington, DC and pursuing her Masters studies in the field of Audiology.

Governor Ehrlich, Dr. Grasmick and Dulaney grad Mrs. Ehrlich encouraged the student leaders they met with to continue their work and to go on to become doctors or lawyers. Dr. Grasmick encouraged them to also consider teaching, because as she pointed out, no one can enter any profession without the help of a teacher.
