Assistant Principal
Effective Date : 7/1/2012
Job Goal:
Provides support and assistance to the school principal. Assists in planning, implementing, directing, and evaluating school programs and activities. Supervises professional and support staff. Performs other duties as assigned.

Performance Responsibilities
- Assist the principal in defining the school's mission and communicating goals and expectations of the total school program
- Provide instructional leadership, in concert with the principal, for the implementation of the curriculum of the Baltimore County Public Schools
- Assist in coordinating the instructional program of the school in conjunction with the appropriate school and central office staff
- Assist the principal in supervising the instructional program of the school
- Assist the principal in leading the process of continuous school improvement
- Monitor and assess student achievement and participation outcomes with appropriate data collection and analysis
- Assist the principal in supervising and evaluating the effectiveness of all school personnel
- Assist in creating a productive work climate by gaining the cooperation of staff and students
- Administer and coordinate school discipline and maintain necessary discipline records
- Serve as liaison in coordinating supportive services and other social agencies to help meet student and family needs
- Coordinate and supervise student activities
- Write reports relative to conferences, suspensions, court reports, etc.
- Assume responsibility for maintaining attendance procedures
- Engage in professional activities which contribute to leadership development
- Assist in determining and implementing school organization, student placement and evaluation, and services and programs that provide for the needs of children
- Provide for changes in schedules and programs to meet the needs of individual students
- Communicate effectively with students, staff, administrative and supervisory personnel, parents, and community
- Assist the principal with the responsibility for the business management functions of the local school finances
- Perform all other duties as assigned
Qualification/Experience
- Four (4) of outstanding teaching and /or administrative experience at the appropriate level.
- Possession of a master's degree from an accredited institution
- Possession of a Maryland Advanced Professional Certificate
- Possession of or eligible for Maryland Administrator I Certificate Endorsement
- One (1) year of outstanding experience as an assistant principal if applying as an external candidate
- Completion of an Aspiring Leader modules of Baltimore County Public Schools Leadership Development Program preferred
- Demonstrated leadership experience at the school and/or school system level (It is recommended that The Learning to Lead Framework be submitted as documentation of the leadership experience.)
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of pedagogy
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of public education administration
- Knowledge, skill, and successful experience with the school improvement process
- Knowledge, skill, and successful experience in the use and analysis of school performance data
- Possession of technology competency (e.g., database, internet, spreadsheet, word processing, and related applications).
- Skill and experience in data analysis and application.
- Ability to properly maintain confidential information
- Outstanding oral and written communication skills
SALARY:
(Effective July 1, 2012 salaries)
Elementary School Assistant Principals - $80,342 - $116,976
Middle School Assistant Principals - $85,150 - $123,983
High School Assistant Principals - $90,249 - $131,410
Based on the Exempt 12-month Administrative, Executive, and Professional Employees salary schedule.

- Supervises the instructional program of the school.

- Develops a school improvement plan that supports the Indicators of Progress.
- Monitors and assesses student achievement and participation outcomes with appropriate data collection and analysis.
- Supervises and evaluates the effectiveness of all school personnel.
- Assesses the need for staff development for all school personnel and plans appropriate activities. Provides a program designed for school-community coordination and keeps open lines of communication between the community and the Board of Education.
- Directs the business functions of the school, such as budget preparation, accounting, and expenditure authorization.
- Works directly with students in developing positive student leadership through school and community activities.
- Interprets and implements the policies of the Board of Education and local school to the community served through continuous flow of communications, such as newsletters, public talks before community groups, and communications to students and parent associations.
- Engages in professional activities which contribute to leadership development.
- Administers and coordinates school discipline. Communicates effectively with students, staff, administrative and supervisory personnel, parents, and community.
Qualification/Experience
- Four (4) years of outstanding teacher and /or administrative experience. Appointment generally follows experience as an assistant principal.
- One (1) year of outstanding experience as a principal if applying as an external candidate.
- Possession of a master's degree from an accredited institution
- A broad range of teaching experience at the appropriate level is preferable, as well as related extracurricular activities of responsibility and leadership.
- Possession or eligibility of a Maryland Advanced Professional Certificate
