On May 19, the gymnasium of Kingsville Elementary School was transformed into a miniature Oriole Park at Camden Yards as the school celebrated its many volunteers with a baseball-themed luncheon in their honor!
More than 80 volunteers attended the luncheon which featured hot dogs, hamburgers, baseball cupcakes, and baseball-related entertainment provided by first-, third-, and fourth-grade students in addition to Kingsville’s jazz band. Third-grade teacher Amy DeNike’s students performed a rendition of “Casey at the Bat” entitled, “Kingsville Volunteers Go to Bat” while first-grade teacher Linda Mattio’s students sang “Take Me Out to the Ballgame.” Other classes performed original cheers and songs.
Principal Susan H. Felts welcomed the group of volunteers and reminded them how vital they are to the school, the teachers, and the children. After the entertainment and lunch, many lucky volunteers took home gift baskets, which were provided by the faculty and staff of Kingsville.
The volunteer program at Kingsville Elementary School is extremely active. The school was recognized in 2001 as a Maryland Blue Ribbon School, and the volunteer program at the school was highlighted as a major component of the school’s success. Currently, Kingsville has more than 150 regular volunteers who help in classrooms, with fluency programs, and with the school’s PTA. The celebration on May 19 recognized the hard work, dedication, and impact that such volunteers have on the school and community as they go to bat for the students on a daily basis.
