Health News: We seem to always be sharing germs at school! To prevent the spread of these germs, WASH YOUR HANDS FREQUENTLY, drink lots of fluids, and rest when you are feeling ill. If the children have a fever or yellow drainage from their nose, please consider keeping them home. The children should be fever free for 24 hours before returning to class.

IS IT A COLD OR THE FLU?
Many people have started coming down with the flu or something that has many of the same symptoms. Cold and flu symptoms are similar, but you usually feel worse with the flu.

Some of the symptoms of a cold include a stuffy nose or runny nose, sore throat, and sometimes a mild fever. Children may have 4 – 6 colds a year. With adults, the number of colds depends on their exposure to children. Colds can begin with mild symptoms including a scratchy throat and sneezing. These can be followed by nasal discharge, sore throat, cough, headache, malaise, chills, and muscle aches. REMEMBER, what appears to be “just a cold”, can become more serious and lead to such problems as ear infections, bronchitis, and sinusitis.

The Flu symptoms will include a higher than usual fever that will last a longer period of time. Weakness and an increase desire to sleep all day usually distinguishes the symptoms from a cold. If symptoms last for more than 7 days, call your doctor.

If you need health insurance for your children, please contact me for an application for the Maryland Childrens Health Plan.
