BOARD OF EDUCATION OF BALTIMORE COUNTY, MARYLAND

Tuesday, February 29, 2000

The Board of Education of Baltimore County, Maryland, met in special session at 5:15 p.m. at Greenwood. President Donald L. Arnold and the following Board members were present: Mr. H. J. Jack Barnhart, Ms. Phyllis E. Ettinger, Mr. John A. Hayden, III, Dr. Warren C. Hayman, Mr. Michael P. Kennedy, Ms. Jean M. H. Jung, Mr. John A. Olszewski, Jr., Ms. Carolyn Ross-Holmes, Mr. James R. Sasiadek, Mr. Sanford V. Teplitzky, and Mr. James E. Walker. In addition, Dr. Anthony G. Marchione, Superintendent of Schools; staff members; and members of various civic, employee, and community organizations were present as was the press.

The open session commenced with the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag, which was led by Mr. John A. Olszewski, Jr., and a period of silent meditation for those who have served education in the Baltimore County Public Schools.

Mr. Arnold noted the impact of the selection of a new superintendent on students and adults currently in our schools as well as the entire community. He stated the Board recognized its responsibility to the community and to the children and approached the selection process with the utmost seriousness. Mr. Arnold then briefly described the selection process. He stated that based on the Board's analysis of its selection criteria and the candidate's qualifications, the Board believes it has found the person to serve as Baltimore County Public Schools' next superintendent. Mr. Arnold described the candidate as approachable, accessible, supportive, innovative, community-focused, and student centered, a man whose key question is, "How will this help a child be successful?"

Dr. Joseph Allen Hairston was introduced by President Arnold, and Mr. Arnold announced that the press would have an opportunity to ask questions of Dr. Hairston at the conclusion of the meeting.

Dr. Hairston was presented a Maryland flag, a Baltimore County flag, Baltimore County mug, and a lapel pin.

On motion of Mr. Barnhart, seconded by Ms. Ettinger, the meeting was adjourned at 5:25 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,
