How We Teach and Learn

Devices: Protecting Your Child

At Baltimore County Public Schools, we take safety very seriously, and protecting your child is one of our highest priorities. While meaningful instructional technology is essential to provide learning opportunities that prepare every student for success in the future, we are also aware of the potential for danger and protecting your child is one of our highest priorities.

As required by the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA) and the Protecting Children in the 21st Century Act, BCPS devices use a filter to block access to websites that are obscene, pornographic, or harmful to our students. The filter protects BCPS devices both at school and at home. Teachers can submit requests to the Web Filter Team to block additional websites, or to unblock a website that supports learning.

In addition, as part of our regular curriculum, BCPS educates students about appropriate online behavior, including how to stay safe when interacting with other individuals on social networking websites and in chat rooms, as well as cyberbullying awareness how to respond.

The Board of Education’s Technology Acceptable Use Policy for Students (Policy 6202) explains the board’s belief in the thoughtful use of educational technology and student responsibilities. Rule 6202 explains how students are allowed to use BCPS technology resources, and personal and BCPS devices, as required by CIPA.
