How We Teach and Learn

How We Teach
Our Why:

Preparing every student to graduate with not only a diploma but a resume, as citizens ready to give back to the world.

Our "gift with purchase" is offering real-world experiences.

By focusing on literacy and climate, our educators build relationships and invest in students as learners through collaborative lessons, small group learning opportunities, and real-world activities that use technology when appropriate.
See what learning looks like in BCPS.

Beyond learning how to read and write, students become insiders in each subject area, so that they can read, write, think, and communicate like professionals. Learn More

A safe, warm, welcoming school climate makes students feel connected to school and builds relationships that support their learning. Learn More

Modern Tools Unlock Opportunities

Students access a world of content organized by their teachers.

Parents communicate with teachers and find student, school, and BCPS information. (See DID YOU KNOW sidebar for all features)

Every student in Grades 1-12 has their own device.

We teach students how to responsibly use technology for learning while keeping students safe and protected.

How We Began Using Student Devices

BCPS launched student devices at 10 Lighthouse elementary schools in fall 2014, 7 Lighthouse middle schools in fall 2015, and 3 Lighthouse high schools in 2016. Learn about our Lighthouse story.

Lighthouse schools were part of S.T.A.T. (Students and Teachers Accessing Tomorrow), which brought to every school: instructional shifts to improve student engagement and deepen learning; digital curriculum; school-based instructional coaches; intensive professional learning about meeting the needs of all learners; and wireless and broadband.

S.T.A.T. is in its final year of a 5-year independent evaluation by Johns Hopkins University.
